Kris's latest release, "ON MY LEVEL," delivers an amazing performance and a sound that I feel is one of the best coming out of hip-hop today. Kris has a distinct voice that complements the beats he uses. He has the raspiness of a more aggressive high-energy rap track and the beat selection of a more modern underground hyper pop and rage sound. It's something fairly new for the city but has been a bit more explored and established in the US. He reminds me of Baby Keem and another fellow artist from Montreal by the name of Night Lovell. He has some Montreal rap characteristics, but he also has something very different to offer on top of that. The sound and production style behind "ON MY LEVEL" begins with a crazy electronic instrumental and a powerful 808s bass. This starts to establish the atmosphere for the entire track. It does it right off the bat with no slow and overly drawn-out intros. We get straight into it and Kris is right there from the very start performing. Kris's cadence is a significant standout feature of the entire track and career. The beat is incredible, but his cadence makes the music hit that much harder. The way he flows on the beat with that unique cadence makes this track so astounding. I can't get enough of the way he changes his pitch and rhythms throughout his bars to fit the beat. His writing skills and structure style are excellent. The song has many amazing moments, but one thing it does exceptionally well creates a moment that keeps you engaged and satisfied as a listener throughout the entire duration. Countless times, the music has been original, but it is repetitive or simply bland. Kris does an amazing job of taking something already interesting and structuring it in such a way that things don't repeat too many times. His lyrical abilities are also on display here. In this track, he has some great lyrical play. One of my favourites is "I'm so photogenic (Woo), Why's my car so tinted, Cause the cops are killing, They don't like my pigment." There are so many great bars in this song that you realize just how talented he is as a rapper and a lyricist. Then you add the fact that he uses modern vocal style and beat selection and you have a combination that is just insane. I love everything this track offers and it’s most importantly a track you can vibe to. I would love to see what Kris has to offer us next. I would love to see some type of project in the near future with this type of sound and beat selection. Never the less, i’m excited to see what he has in store for us next.
