WOIIYOIE TAPES VOL.1 - Skiifall
Skiifall
Skiifall, a Montreal-based artist, released a three-track EP titled "WOIIYOIE TAPES VOL.1" released last summer that features three diverse records that demonstrate Skii's versatility. "Lost Angeles" was the first song on the EP that sparked my curiosity, and it was a track that entirely altered my outlook on the Montreal scene. Skiifall is a one-of-a-kind artist who brings a unique energy and mood to the city. I was surprised he wasn't a major artist because his accent, delivery, and cadence are all so well-crafted. The track was even featured on Louis Vuitton x NBA 2021 collection video. His music has gained international attention and critical acclaim. Everything feels so easy to him because he exudes such confidence, and his songs take on a whole new meaning and depth. The beautiful trumpets that open "Lost Angeles" add to the tension and suspense. The beat is simple but supports Skii, adding a much-needed thump to the track. Skii's strong British accent is evident, and his flow and delivery are firmly rooted in the UK rap style.
On that topic, Canada and the United Kingdom have several relationships. Canada, in my opinion, is a cross between the United States and the United Kingdom. The best of both worlds, plus our own special touch. Skii is exactly that. Bringing the British aspect while also incorporating his own Canadian heritage. He reminds me of Kendrick Lamar in that he has that lyrical rap in him, but his music has evolved into something that is unique. It tells a deeper story. This track just brings out the emotion. Guillaume Landry directed the music video for "Lost Angeles", and I believe it is one of the first videos to come out of Toronto that genuinely captures the track and its excitement. Even the color grading was done with care. The creator does not always intend for these things to happen (this is coming from a creator). However, it appears to be perfect and significant from the standpoint of a viewer and consumer. "My Gully" and "Bagga Yute" are two other singles from the EP. These, which use the patois English dialect, add a unique flavor to the table. The hard-hitting 808s, silky vocal tones, and excellent compositions, combined with the ideal balance of English and Patois, create something truly unique. it’s a sound I haven’t experienced before. This project set the bar very high, but Skii is a different level of artistry. I know he will come with something even bigger and even more impactful this year.
