Chosen by Da Crook
Toronto Music Archive
Da Crook just delivered another banger titled “Chosen.” This track hits home in every way. The song begins with a cinematic guitar riff that sounds like it came from a movie. It immediately starts the track and establishes the tone. It gradually transitions into a more electronic version/edit of that riff, introducing a powerful 808 to add the necessary punch. It's a pretty long intro but the instrumentals are very cinematic and do create this really big sound stage. Da Crook sweeps the beat like it's nothing, and his flows and rhythms, combined with his lyrical content, are truly what make Da Crook so good. His cadence is contagious, he creates this melodic rap drill mix that is so unique to the city, and the way he delivers it just amplifies everything. The delivery, combined with his tone of voice, is just right; he has this natural pitch that works for both being serious and for the more melodic elements of his music. The mixing and mastering, as well as the visuals, amplify all of this. He commissioned Carlton Visuals to create the imagery for the track, and he did not disappoint. Da Crook has a natural serious tone that matches the look on camera. This is significant because it indicates that he is truly in his element, with nothing fake and everything true to who he is. It's a complete package, and Da Crook has advanced to a higher level of artistry because of it. Da Crook is quickly becoming something special, as evidenced by his quality and consistency. His effortless flows and bars prove that he was made for this. His cadence and delivery of the lyrics are what set him apart. It all comes from living what he says and having a vivid imagination to tell these stories so quickly and in such detail. His storytelling is a big part of what makes Da Crook stand out; the only other guy who does it at his level is Paisley. This track is a classic already, I'm looking forward to Crook dropping some type of project in the near future. We need a full body of work, I think that will take him to the next level if he does.
