Yung Tory
Toronto artist blog.
I've been listening to Yung Tory nonstop for the past year. I've known about Yung Tory since 2017, thanks to his association with Lil Durk at the time. Tory is one of the city's more unique acts; his sound and style approach is just fun and loud. I love his classic "YAHWWW" ad lib, which he uses in many tracks, including "his latest 'WTF" remix and his classic "Fake Love" track, which he released back in 2021. His affiliation with Atlanta and having family there is a big reason as to why Tory is so unique and successful in the city. He has the two city's at his disposal and his culture and style is so much richer because of it. I like Tory's overall cadence and delivery; he has this melodic tone with this delivery style that changes throughout his releases but always packs a punch. Tory is in his prime musically right now, releasing his best work to date. The global market, on the other hand, is sleeping; I believe Tory is currently running the Toronto scene, but in time, the city will rise and usher in a new era. Tory will have the opportunity to become a major hit maker on a higher level when that happens. Not only in Canada, but all over the world. He competes with any US talent you throw at him, and it's incredible to watch. Tory has been producing music since 2016, according to his entire discography. His first single, "Water," is a good song with a signature Tory ad lib and a very similar cadence. Just not as refined and assured as it is now. "Dojo" would follow, with a different flow and beat selection. I feel like this is when Tory was just experimenting, when he already had most of the things figured out, but around this time, Soundcloud was the biggest thing out, and music was just in another dimension fr. The next two singles, "Run It Up" and "On My Mind," would have a similar sound to the previous tracks and would round out his first year. 2017 would begin with a track titled "Stop," which is similar to the tracks from 2016, but with a much higher quality production. The progress is already visible. His next single, "Run It Up" Remix, with Lil Durk, will be a classic for a long time. This was back when Durk was just regaining steam after a slump in 2015. "Make It Look Easy," in my opinion, is the beginning of the Tory we all know and love today. Everything from his cadence to his vocal range to his ad libs all contribute to the classic Tory we've all come to love. Throughout the year, new music was released, including "Dope & Hoes," "Never," and "Sauce." With singles like "Friends," "Henny Dance," and "Told You," 2018 would be the start of something great. 2019 would bring some classics such as the "Still Here" EP, "Charades," and "Alter Ego." 2020 will usher in a completely new Tory. His motivation and work ethic skyrocketed, and he began to roll out banger after banger like "Tory Time," "Lil Bih," and "REAL." With only hard hitters like "Hennessy," "Fake Love," and "Row Ya Boat" on his track list, 2021 could only get better. This is when I started paying attention to every single release. This is when Yung Tory began to drop certified hit level tracks with each release. "Free Dope 3" and the Remix took things to the next level. This is one of the best bodies of work I've ever heard come out of the city, and it easily ranks among the top 15 hiphop albums of this generation in my opinion. From top to bottom, this is a classic. "Tory's World," "AMG," and "Diamonds" are just a few of the album's highlights. After listening to Tory's entire discography, I can see his progression over the years and how much he knew back in 2016. His sound and style will continue to evolve, and his influence will only grow over time. He'll undoubtedly have a Lil Durk moment soon. He'll explode even bigger than before. Especially with this new wave Toronto is about to go through. Tory is someone that has so much more to offer and his talents will be appreciated in due time.
