Kris The $pirit
Toronto artist blog.
Kris The $pirit is an experimental artist with a lot of talent and a lot of great music to back it all. His vocal style and lyrical ability are undeniable and his catalog can most definitely prove that. He’s worked with the likes of Eva Shaw and has been releasing music since 2018. His music is primarily comprised of darker, grittier sounds. Everything from the instrumental and beat selection to his cadence and mixing technique is done with intention. I admire his consistency with his sound; he has it down pat. His first song, "Another One (From the "Unframed" Soundtrack)," was released in late 2018. The track combines powerful 808s with that especially heavy autotune that was so prominent during Sound Cloud's height. This is where Kris got his experimental element; his future work would follow the same principles but at a much higher quality and level of production. Kris's powerful tone and voice offered folks an excellent idea of his potential. The energy was incredible on its own, but the flows and cadence were already so good that it was only a matter of time. His next single, "Cyanide (From the "Unframed" Soundtrack)," would be released in November of 2018. This tune had the same production quality as the previous one, but it had a somewhat different flow and beat. He brings out the bars and the wisdom on this one, it's lyrical rap. Kris' flexibility shined through on this track. His ability to spit biblical bars while also having fun and making more feel-good music, such as his first tune, was already preparing Kris for something great. He also released two full-length EPs, "Spirit Mode Vol.1" and "THE PRANA," which included classics like "Smoked," "Death & Rebirth," and "CHOICES" with followed that same sound style as his first two singles. 2019 saw the release of only one single, "Do What I Want," which presented a fantastic blend of that exciting experimental underground vibe with that lyrical rap sound. It gives me Carnage vibes, everything from the instrumental choices and the way his cadence sounded. But his crazy catchy flows took it to another level. The simple yet catchy ad-libs contributed significantly to the improvement of this track. Overall, this is my personal favorite, and it still stands the test of time. 2020 was a significantly more eventful year, with two singles and a full-length EP released. "Higher" is the title of the first release. This song has a very different vibe from his last single. It has that dreamy electric instrumental and gentle angelic vocals to tie everything together. At this moment, his discography is extremely wide and intriguing. His following project, titled "Savvy," consisted of six tracks. My personal favorites and the ones that stuck out the most were "Show Me Love," "Hit the Lotto," and "Knowhere". I like the vibe this project gives off; its versatility plays a huge part in its importance and longevity. The sound and style continue to evolve and progress over each release. Getting more mature and professional every year. 2021 was the most eventful year yet, with a slew of new releases, including "40 Bands," "ROWDYRUFF BOYZ," and "DOWN BAD." This year, I feel that his cadence has become more refined as if he has fully discovered his sound. This would only get even better with singles like "OUTSIDE," "BIG BAGS," and "Floorin", which have made 2022 his best work yet. The improved output and more refined cadence truly tie everything together. Kris has one of the most diverse and interesting discographies in the city and it's a matter of time until everyone will notice.
