Velow
Toronto artist blog.
Velow is a powerful and distinct voice in Toronto's rap scene. Back in late 2020, I recall seeing him all over Toronto media. He came into the game with a distinct voice and a powerful message. He was and continues to be a breath of fresh air in Toronto's street rap scene. I'm sure he had the pop smoke references when he initially came out, and people were merely watching from afar. But now, he has truly shown his genuine abilities and his capacity to consistently provide high-quality records. All due respect to Velow, and after delving into his discography, we can get a good sense of his music and story. Velow's career began with his debut single, "Pisst." This track was the catalyst for the massive influx of new fans and audience growth he desired. It was like the media just ate it up and the people connected to it. The track brought the powerful 808s with these unique instruments. It's a beat we hadn't heard from Toronto before, and it's mixed with that deep, aggressive voice and that rapid, captivating flow. This song has received over a quarter-million streams on Spotify alone. His following single, "Phone Call," had a similar mood with a slightly slower beat and that traditional flow we all loved. His following record, "Doing Fine," was a little different. The instrumental was on the Drake wave, and his flow was flawless. He conveyed his story while performing, and he made it unforgettable. He was really finishing the year well and laying the groundwork for a more action-packed 2021. His 2021 began with a single titled "Laugh To Myself," which continued the energy he brought in the previous three singles while prepping for his debut project titled "Sooner Than Later." This was a five-track EP that included a new record titled "Been This Way." "Been This Way" was his most memorable single thus far.
His pace, delivery, and vocal tones are all in sync with his storyline. He was truly expressing his thoughts and talking his shit. He came into the game with a message to share and a narrative to tell. He reminds of King Von with his storytelling, he tells them so vividly, while making it sonically driven. He was relatively quiet for the remainder of 2021 until 2022 when he delivered a tremendous performance on his song "Tell Em How You Feel." He flexed his muscles to a high-energy rhythm with some unique flows, then continued talking his shit and putting people in their place. This one was unquestionably a hood classic; it was highly appreciated and was accompanied by a Lawrained-directed video. This brings us to his most recent release, as well as the most mature point in his career. Velow recently traveled to Jamaica and released "Come Round," a record with a cinematic journey-style video. This one is unique in that he gives you a deeper glimpse into his life and does it with a lovely and catchy hook that stayed in my head for days. He has definitely matured as an artist, and songs like these make me appreciate his work even more. I enjoy the high-energy tune in the street and everything else, but records like "Come Round" are what highlight his career and will propel him forward in the music industry. Over the last two years, he's really created a reputation for himself and produced some tremendous tunes. It's incredible to watch not just the improvement in the previous two years, but also to see such a natural talent achieve the success they deserve. There is still much more for Velow to achieve, but it is one that will undoubtedly thrive in the future.
