Wave Montega

Wave Montega has been on my radar and on my playlist for the past few months. His sound, look and energy just feel like a full package for a legendary artist. His sound is amongst the best in his genre to come out of the city. His drill rap sound is heavily influenced by British drill, which he blends with his Toronto roots. It's an intriguing sound because he doesn't sound like any other rapper coming out of Toronto; he has a truly unique blend that has and will continue to catch on around the world with due time. His music definitely benefits from the fact that he travels a lot. That multicultural experience can only help someone's perspective and music quality. The content simply becomes more interesting. Waves' discography isn't massive, but it is significantly larger and more cohesive than most in this scene. Wave has been releasing music for a few years, with his first single, "Show Me Love," being released back in 2018. He sounds very different here than he does in his recent music, and even his delivery and beat style has changed dramatically. However, the enthusiasm for the craft is evident from the start. This song isn't bad at all; in fact, if you listen to the lyrics, it's a great song. His lyrical content has always been excellent; he understands how to work with words and tell a story has played an important role in his being interesting. His next single “Badder Than Bad” would deliver a melodic rap tune that has a catchy and exciting hook and great overall production. In 2019, three new singles would be released: "Spalding," "Side Bag," and "Cap Money." "Spalding" has a triumphant feeling to it. The simple yet heartfelt instrumental pushes his melodic vocals even further, and the piano makes the lyrics hit even harder. It almost sounds like 50 Cent, but with a more modern sound and Waves-districted vocal tone. "Side Bag" would give us our first look at Wave Montega's drill side.

It has a Toronto sound to it, with a slight British accent, and it makes me nostalgic. Pengz is the only other artist I can think of as an example. He has the same deep vocal tone and strong accent that distinguishes his music. "Cap Money" is the first track that feels like the Wave we know and love. With his cold-hearted lyrical style that felt like he fully embraced drill, he delivered an amazing performance on the jumpy beat and stole the show. "Intrusive Thoughts (Pt1)" and "Chosen" would be released in 2020. The year would also give us his first project titled “Still Wavy.” This project delivered a cohesive collection of tracks that all really play well together, and his catalog became significantly stronger as a result. The music all sounded and felt similar to his "Cap Money" track, which was included in the project. The year 2021 would only have one single, "Deadstock," which is a melodic masterpiece as well as a Toronto masterpiece and classic. Waves' adaptability is fantastic. It's exciting to see him go in so many different directions. Because I know this is just the beginning, and his sound and style will only enhance from here. 2022 is the year I believe Wave truly settled into his music career and began to push the pedal. He put out four singles, "Ibiza," "Dis Life," "Feeling That Way (Remix)," and "Steam Fish," as well as a full-length album titled "CATHARSIS." I discussed the album in another article, but to summarise, it's his best work yet. Wave's consistency in sound, quality, and even presentation really propelled it to new heights. His sound and cadence are so refined that he already sounds like an established artist; his unique flows and hard-hitting bars only add to that fact. His beat selection and production throughout the project are excellent and really felt purposeful. I love his older music but this new Wave really just feels like he's a star. This is a defining project for Wave in the underground, his next will be something hundreds of thousands will be waiting to hear.
